Is that an Eels shirts, as in E / Mark Oliver Everett's band? It's funny how small random details like this can excite hah

Once again, thanks for touching base in this way. I’m amazed you find the time and appreciate it. That very first panel (“welcomes you back!”) was getting creepier with every new installment… Very interesting piece from Mr. Beebe, and it gives me an excuse to bring this up: I was reading yesterday about how Paul Dano often listened to a Nirvana song (referenced in the script) to help him find his Riddler, as well as how Kurt Cobain was an inspiration for the look of THE BATMAN’s Bruce Wayne. Just out of curiosity, if you can speak to it, what inspired Nirvana’s use in EX MACHINA? All the best.

Another beautiful (is that the right word for something so bloody?) installment. And very much looking forward to MATURE READERS!

"What have YOU been reading/watching/otherwise consuming recently?" Right now, I'm digging REACHER on Prime, while in comics, I'm reading the latest volume of ICE CREAM MAN so fast I'm getting brain freeze.

And maybe this is a terrible time to mention it, but Hulu's THE GREAT is, uh, great. Something tells me you and Ruth would like it. Huzzah!

I highly recommend everyone watch "Drive My Car", in a theater if possible. Murakami has been one of my favorite writers for many years and what Ryusuke Hamaguchi was able to do with his short story is nothing short of spectacular. They turned a story reliant on the conventions of literature into a film that could only be told through the visual medium. I can not praise it enough.

Shit, looks like Niko's glorious double-page spread might currently be appearing as a tiny postage stamp at the end of the PDF. We'll get that file corrected ASAP!

I recommend "Joe Perra teaches you how to" it is so unique and beautiful. It has all the quirkiness of "how to with John Wilson," and all the heart of the first season of "Ted Lasso." It is on HBO and the episodes are only 15 minutes! You won't regret it

I liked your All Things Considered interview. I learned a lot in 4 minutes. I second Drive My Car movie (I saw it in the theater, first movie live in 2 years) from Japan. I also just started watching Station Eleven on HBO Max. I liked the book a lot but I read it so long ago (2017), I don't remember much about it. Which is probably good for watching at adaptation. Things are familiar but not disappointing. TV show begins with a flu that wipes out 90% of humanity. There is a comic book that influences a lot of the remaining 10% of people still alive.

Wow !!! What a twist and damn if it isn't so rewarding reading this week by week!

I have a question, also, which I am aware Brian may have been asked a million times, but hopefully you'll understand me asking! I've always been a little scared to pick up Y because I'm unsure how it deals with trans issues?? I know it's a title that is obviously very centred on gender things, and I was just wondering if it would be accessible (/relatable) to a trans reader?

Very very much not intending this comment in a hostile way! BKV, you have done so much for LGBTQ+ representation, which is why I feel comfortable asking this question in this community! Hopefully someone will enlighten me and ill be able to go buy these two omnibuses !!

Peace and love all, have a lovely week, and thanks for another great post !! Xx

This "3 pages once a week" is not something doctor would prescribe since it's actually killing me while I wait for another dose. Still, am gonna take my medicine like a good boy... Great stuff guys!

Just recently "discovered" Ice Cream Man so that's on the menu...

Visited Hungary couple of days ago and bought me some Hungarian sausages so I reckon am consuming that also...

Hath - All that Was Promised is the album I can't stop playing...

Cheers!

Brian/Niko,

That double-page spread is certainly gorgeous on a monitor. I must say that even though the graphic novel you guys are creating is probably meant to be consumed as a whole, and will be once it is released out into the world, there is something quite special about receiving these few pages a week. I think it makes us pore over the work and appreciate it more, like an episode of a television show released weekly rather than the "binge" model.

As for what I've been watching/consuming lately, Hulu is really kicking it out of the park lately, what with Y (I'm still in mourning, BKV! I thought they cast the show perfectly), and Dopesick and the new Amanda Seyfreid show The Dropout. Both of those come highly recommended, although Dopesick is a "heavy" watch.

Yet another awesome cliffhanger, thanks guys! I’d love a post at some point talking about how different it is to write for this format. Like, I’m assuming it’s not the same as a 20-25 page Comic issue. More like the 2000AD Future Shocks model where you craft these little 5-6 page stories but you also need to be aware of the larger story? Fascinating.

I’ve been re-reading Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk and also getting stuck into the beautiful Batman The Imposter by Mattson Tomlin and Andrea Sorrentino which is the perfect accompaniment for anyone that enjoyed the recent Matt Reeves film.

Can’t wait to hear the podcast - that’s sure to make my commute to work more fun!

Spectators... Maybe Spec[ta]tors... Hmm

But that final issue of Y. Pia got me with one panel in particular. First time I cried reading something. But a tremendous ending.

Something I'm currently consuming (and have been for years) is One Piece. It's a tremendous read. I know that some people avoid it because it seems like such a large undertaking, but trust me it's worth it. The world building and attention to detail are incredible. What seems like an off-handed comment can be paid off over 400 chapters/issues later, making it a rewarding read. The humour can also seem a little strange at first, but it becomes infectious as you go on.

Great double page, indeed, to end part 6: trust BKV to always subvert expectations!

Just watched the limited TV series Station Eleven, about a post-pandemic world and how people might reconstruct society, but beautiful, intimate, and thought provoking, and not (as one might think after the past 2+years) depressing at all.

Also enjoying Righteous Thirst for Vengeance by Remender and Araujo; it's got minimal dialogue but the story telling is brilliant. The main character looks like Benedict Wong - the current MCU Sorcerer Supreme - so I'm expecting him to star in the TV adaptation in a few years!

Whoa. This is what I love (one of the things) about your writing. WHAM.Surprise! Loving it. Don't know where we're going, but I'm onboard. And as I am musically-challenged I learned about The Eels. And Ice Cream Man, so many excellent recommendations ...

Niko, man, the drifting smoke from the gun, the spreading blood on the clothes and the wall, the slow fade of color in gray,--I felt the passage of time, which is even more awful that our protagonist(?) was laying there untended to for how long? Makes me grimace. I can't wait to see your next video.

And I have to say this: I feel that Ex Machina is an essential work for our times. When I saw your treatment of the complexities of the NYC political scene, it confirmed what I always felt: BKV absolutely hands down one of the most important writers of our time (I don't want to say too many nice adjectives, cuz y'know, your head might explode).

I did not know HULU had a live action Y! (Don't judge; yes, I DO live under a rock.) Argh, but you know, you can't,... well,... I can't have everything.

What am I reading? Weird things. The Book of Frank by Jim Woodring is intense and whimsical. I picked up an ancient copy of Planet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle, author of Bridge Over the River Kwai. It's very engaging, different in tone from the films, which was surprising, but you can see where they used it as a springboard. That's enough out of me. Have a great week everybody; see you next Monday.
