from zia records i got a used copy of preacher vol 1. it was only like 10 years ago. it’s a long story dealing with a ton of childhood trauma, but i like to think coming back to comics after so many years of my nerd denial was what put me on a DARKER path that led here.

My first floppy comic(s) came from a pawn or collector shop (unsure) in Colorado. I grabbed a few Spider-Man books, including the to be super valuable (wrong) #1 ‘90 polybagged issue. I didn’t buy another comic, due to music obsession, until Sandman in HS because pro-wrestler Raven loved it...bought that from a booksamillion & crept my way in a few years after that to owning far too many.

First comic purchased, Amazing Spider-Man 258. Bought when I was like 6 or 7 with money I had saved up from aunts and uncles. The cover is still one of my favorites! Angie’s comics in Liverpool NY!

I think my first comic pickup was from The Walking Dead series -- from our local comic shop obviously. Since then I've expanded to over 3k books including the trades and hard covers.

The first comic book I bought was the Death of Superman, Superman #75. I was a big DC fan from the cartoons and shows, I'd read a couple of comics, but it wasn't until my dad took us to the store the day it came out that I plunked down my own hard earned.

Oh wow....I was into manga back in my high school days, so maaaybe Akira? I remember trying to collect as much of that in single issues when it was pretty hard to find and finding some at a shop in one of the older parts of Orange County, Orange or Costa Mesa or somewhere like that.

Bought my first comic (ASM #363) from Comic and Card Exchange in Jackson, NJ. Store hasn’t been around in forever- think the owner was arrested for some underage related charges (yikes). Besides that ‘ol chestnut, remains a fond memory for me of riding my bike there with friends and getting some baseball cards too. Who knew that comic would become valuable one day?!

First issue I got with my own money was Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 #1 from Legion Comics in Birmingham AL. I had just gotten my drivers license so as soon as I found out there was a “Season 8” coming out, I went straight to Legion. I had no idea what variant covers were so I was confused when I found multiple versions. I took them all to counter and was like “which do I need” and the guy just shrugged and said “there all the same just pick one” hahaha

Amazing new Spectators as always! Actually makes me look forward to Mondays.

I actually was convinced to check out Saga as my first! I'd borrowed some X-Men and Batman comics from friends as a kid but generally stuck to standard books for my reading. Picked up Saga #1 on digital about 8 years ago and never looked back! Physical collection is up to almost one full bookshelf (including all Saga volumes to date of course) and growing.

I can remember because I only really got into comics recently—better late than never I suppose. Blown away by the illustrations in Neil Gaiman’s Fortunately, the Milk I decided to look up the illustrator, this dude named Skottie Young, only to discover that he had an established career in comics. That meant, of course, that I needed to start reading comics. This was around the time I Hate Fairyland launched and that’s the first comic I bought. That one I got electronically. Once I started reading comics, it was impossible to stop. I wanted more—more Skottie Young, more everything. So I walked into Chicago Comics and they sent me home with God Country and Descender…and now they send me home with more awesomeness every week. So much awesomeness.

Uncanny X-Men 310, I was 9 years old and it was about Cyclops’s bachelor party, some heart-to-heart with the son he barely knew (Cable) and an interruption by the very 90’s villain “The X-Cutioner” (who strangely was not involved at all in the crossover “The X-Cutioner’s Song” crossover that came out a year and a half prior. Seriously what was editorial doing?). Anyways I understood little to none of it, and also loved every single panel.

My first comic was Runaways! It was my senior year of high school and I always wanted to try out comics. Walked into a local comic store for the first time and never looked back. Picked up runaways on a whim cause it was a cool cover and the first thing I saw when I walked in lol
