How was your hopefully long weekend?
Brian here, just back from a great trip with Human Daughter to NYC. And while many of the national headlines she and I saw after last week’s subway attack described a “city gripped by terror,” all we experienced was New Yorkers’ yawning indifference to another of these psychotic losers, save everyone’s resolute dedication to not let it fuck up the morning commute.
I left more impressed than ever with my favorite city, and in possession of a lot of new grist for Spectators.
Speaking of which, because we accidentally reversed last Monday’s pages (apologies, and a reminder that you can always read the latest updated files of our serialized graphic novel for FREE here), let’s rerun those for you in the proper order before we get to our new stuff…
And now, courtesy co-creator Niko Henrichon and letterer/eagle-eyed copy editor Fonografiks, Spectators continues:
I used to live on the Manhattan street corner Niko has lightly fictionalized for the above scene, and it’s amazing how his black-and-white drawings (done from a studio in France!) are able to instantly transport me right back there.
But after nearly forty pages in and around this single location, I’m excited for you to see where our story travels next.
To be continued and all that.
For now, legendary editor/my friend Scott Dunbier just announced this beautiful-looking new crowd-funded, all-star comic anthology to help support Ukraine:
All profits go to an organization called Operation USA, so thanks in advance for checking it out.
While I’ve been Substacking up a storm, my old friends back at Panel Syndicate have been equally busy putting out awesome new digital comics, including the latest hilarious installment of Blackhand & Ironhead from writer/artist David López and colorist Kike J. Díaz.
Check out the gorgeous preview page below, then head over to Panel Syndicate to pay any price you think is fair (including nothing, if you’re behind on bills at the moment) to download one of the most unique superhero stories being published anywhere.
While you’re visiting Panel Syndicate, I suppose you can also catch up on Friday from my archenemy Ed Brubaker (and my heroes Marcos Martin and Muntsa Vicente).
Ed’s somehow also got his fifth original graphic novel in less than two years (?!) available at your friendly neighborhood comic shop, his latest in the Reckless series from Image with the incomparable Sean Phillips and killer colorist Jacob Phillips.
Hang on, it’s called The Ghost in You?!
Did goddamn Brubaker steal Spectators’ gimmick?
I’d better actually read this one…
What’s your travel schedule like this year? Are you finally leaving your bubble, or did you never stop globetrotting?
I originally thought that deadlines would keep me close to home for most of 2022, and they probably still will, but I have to admit that it was really nice to be back inside airports again.
And it seems like conventions are gradually spooling back up around the planet, so I was curious if there are any comic-related shows you think Niko and/or I should consider potentially attending someday:
Please share any recommendations for your favorite local/international Nerd Proms with us in the chat, and here’s hoping we can all run into each other in person soon.
This Friday, we’ll be back with some particularly sweet exclusive content/prize opportunities for our generous paid subscribers in The Tower, so why not:
Wants to know more,
BKV
Love to see you at C2E2 in Chicago this year!
